Workshops

Time layer in Ogaki Workshop

Atsuhito Sekiguchi
Location: Reception at Ogaki Event House
Date/Time: Sept 21, 23, 28, 11:00-12:00

In the Jomon Period (approx. 14,000 BC-400 BC) the Ogaki Castle site was covered by the ocean.
In this workshop participants will be provided with an explanation and tour of drilling points as they use iPod touch and computers to view these sites.

Preference will be given to those who have pre-registered. The workshop is limited to 6 participants, and requires an hour to complete.


CCCity Game Workshop

Masami Hirabayashi
Location: Reception at Ogaki Event House
Date/Time: Sept 20, 21, 23, 28, 16:00-17:30; Sept 27, 11:00-12:30

CCCity is a game that designates the city as its stage, using iPod touch and mobile phones. In this workshop guests are able to actually participate in the game.
Preference will be given to those who have pre-registered. The workshop is limited to 6 participants and requires an hour and 30 minutes to complete.


Javanese Dance Workshop

Shin Sakuma, Aiko Ito
Location: Butokuden
Date/Time: Sat, Sept 20, 13:00-16:00; Sun, Sept 21, 15:30-18:30; Fri, Sept 26, 18:00-21:00; Sun, Sept 28, 14:00-17:00

Experience the wisdom of Javanese dance in a natural setting with this workshop where you can “dance like the water.” Through movements of the body, participants aim to heighten their perception, gaining a sense of the earth, wood, wind, clouds, and the moon. On the last day participants will perform a dance to the sounds of gamelan music.
Pre-registration is required.


A-I-U-E-OGAKI

IAMAS DIT Students
Location: Ogaki Event House
Date/Time: Sunday, September 21, 13:00-16:00

This workshop was designed so that participants could enjoy the process of translating “words” into choreography—letter by letter—as a medium of communication. Participants begin by selecting “words,” and then perform these in dance, following the choreography chart provided. Dances by participants will be filmed and projected in the workshop space along with the corresponding words.


Gamelan Workshop

Atsushi Nishijima
Location: Butokuden
Date/Time: Sun, Sept 21, 13:00-15:00; Mon, Sept 22, 15:00-17:00; Sat, Sept 27, 19:00-21:00; Sun, Sept 28, 14:00-17:00

This is an invitation to gamelan by sound artist Atsushi Nishijima. The workshop will not focus on orthodox Javanese music, but will rather use gamelan instruments to discover various new sounds and ways of performing. On the last day (Sept. 28th) we will hold a world premier performance.

Cinematic Media Workshop

VIDEO ROMANTICA (Tetsu Kubota + Naoki Honma)
Location: Butokuden
Date/Time: Sun, Sept 21 13:00-15:00, 15:30-18:30; Fri, Sept 26 18:00-21:00; Sat, Sept 27, 19:00-21:00

Each participant will shoot a short, light-hearted movie with a camera they are given based on the film subject of gamelan instruments and dancing. Even if you’ve never picked up a camera before, feel free to come. The resulting film will be displayed alongside the music and dance performances on September 28th. Each workshop session will be held at the same time as the gamelan and dance workshops.

Wayang Workshop

HANA★JOSS+Kaori Okado
Location: Butokuden
Date/Time: Sat, Sept 22, 18:00-21:00

Participants work together to perform an opera that is composed by Wayang Kulit (shadow puppetry), dance and gamelan! Referring to the Opera score, “Adventures of Super Shark Grandpa,” written by HANA★JOSS and some middle school students, participants will boldly expand the piece to reflect Ogaki City. Following the workshop there will be a recital including technical elements such as lighting and video.
